Excursions around Loutraki – The Heraion Lighthouse or Melangavi @ Perachora, Corinthia

Within walking distance from Loutraki is the lighthouse in Akra Melangavi or Lighthouse Heraion. It is one of the largest beacons of the Corinthian, and is under the responsibility of the Greek Navy. It drives safely the ships that sail to the Corinthian and move to the harbor and the Corinth Canal.
We gathered the 10 things you need to know about Lighthouse Heraion:

  • It started opperating with oil as a source of energy in 1897 .
  • In 1982 the lighthouse was changed to electric, the oil machinery was replaced and operated as a supervised electric
  • It is also known as Lighthouse Heraion, from the ancient temple of Hera that is close to it.
  • It has a height of 13 meters and a focal height of 58 meters (Focal height is the distance of the lamp of the lighthouse from the sea level)
  • It emits a white flash every 10 seconds. And dimming 19 nm
  • During the Second World War, the beacon remained off
  • To the right of the lighthouse, in the background, Alkyonides islands, the epicenter of the large earthquake of 1981
  • On August 21st is the world day of lighthouses, and Lighthouse Melangabe opens its doors and you can visit it!
  • One of the top spots to enjoy the sunset in Corinthia!
  • It is a typical example of “pharmaceutical” architecture. It is stone-built with angiolites and is characterized by simplicity in design and structural robustness.
